As a practitioner in the cemented carbide blade industry for more than 15 years, I would like to tell you that it is possible to check whether a carbide blade is cracked or not even without high precision instruments. We all know that carbide cutting blades have brittle characteristics, if the carbide blades used in your machine unfortunately has a small crack, please stop using it immediately, because it is easy to cause dangerous accidents, for most of the small production factories that are not equipped with high-precision inspection instruments, learn the following methods to know clearly whether the carbide inserts in your hands have cracks or not.
Sound Test
Blade installation before, with a finger hook blade hanging, with a wooden hammer gently tapping carbide blade, listen to the sound produced, clear ringing usually indicates that there is no crack. However, a dull sound may indicate the presence of cracks or other defects, and such blades should be prohibited from use.
Dye Penetrant Test
1. After the blade is cleaned by sandblasting, it is first cleaned with kerosene and then observed with the naked eye or a magnifying glass. When there are cracks on the blade, there will be obvious black lines on the surface.
2. 65% of kerosene, 30% of transformer oil and 5% of turpentine into a solution, add a small amount of Sudan red, will be pre-checked knives into the solution soaked for about 10 -15min, removed and washed with water, coated with a layer of kaolin, drying and then check the surface, such as cracks on the blades, the solution’s color will be shown in the white clay, which is clearly visible to the naked eye.
Light Test
By shining a strong light on one side of the carbide blade, you can check if the light passes through the cracks on the other side. This is particularly effective for detecting very small cracks.
